The Solubility of Calcium in Serum

چکیده

It appears that about 20 per cent of the serum calcium is ionized (Neuhausen and Marshall, 1922), and that 60 or 70 per cent is diffusible (von Meysenbug, Pappenheimer, Zucker, and Murray, 1921). These figures show that serum calcium is not present in simple aqueous solution. Practically all blood calcium is found in the serum (Kramer and Tisdall, 1922). The normal value for adult humans is subject to variations between 9 and 10.5 mg. per 100 ml. of serum (Kramer, Tisdall, and Howland, 1921), and fhe value for other animals is abollt the same. A decrease to 7 mg. per cent or lower is suggestive of approaching tetany in parathyroidectomieed dogs (Salvesen, 1924). Hypercalcemia may also be induced in dogs by the action of parathyroid extract, with serious or fatal effects above 15 mg. per cent (C&p, Clark, and Scott, 1925). The highest values found by these authors were around 21 mg. per cent. Much higher values may be found aft,er injection of calcium salts; and by absorption of calcium salts from relatively strong solut, ions introduced into the intestine values as high as 35 my. per cent may be reached (unpublished data of the author). These examples show possibilities of considerable variation, and as the serum samples are centrifuged before determination it is probable that they represent figures for dissolved calcium. The literature does not suggest concomitant changes in the chemical characteristics of the blood sufficient to allow for such an increase in calcium solubility over the normal.

The Solubility of Tertiary Calcium Phosphate in Cerebrospinal Fluid

It was shown in a recent publication (1) that blood serum is normally supersaturated with tertiary calcium phosphate, and the suggestion was made that other body fluids are similarly supersaturated with this salt. In order to confirm this idea, solubility experiments were undertaken with cerebrospinal fluid; it was furthermore hoped that these studies might throw some light on the question of t...

The effect of phosphate on the solubility of calcium carbonate and of bicarbonate on the solubility of calcium and magnesium phosphates.

In 1925, Holt, La Mer, and Chown (1) reported that the apparent solubility product [Ca++13[P04=J2 was greater in a solution of inorganic salts approximating the composition of serum than it was in solutions of sodium chloride of the same ionic strength. Very shortly thereafter, Sendroy and Hastings (2) recalculated values for pK’, Ca,(PO& from the data of Holt, La Mer, and Chown and also report...

Formulation and Evaluation of Nanocrystals of a Lipid Lowering Agent

Atorvastatin calcium, the lipid lowering agent, is taken as a model drug characterized by poor water solubility and bioavailability. In this study an attempt was made for preparation of nanocrystals using high pressure homogenization. A number of stabilizers were included as well as polymers at different concentrations, and the formulations were homogenized for ten cycles at a pressure of 1000 ...

Evaluating the Serum Levels of Calcium, Chloride, Potassium and Sodium in the Stroke Patients

Backgrounds and Aims: Stroke incidence rate has increased during the past 2 decades. The question of whether calcium, chloride, potassium, sodium levels are associated with stroke has remained controversial. The present study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, and chloride within stroke patients. Materials and Methods: The study participants consisted of 5...

Study on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine

Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...
